Tips to Maintain Wooden Items in Your Home

Taking care of our belongings at home isn’t as simple as we expected, just like the wooden items. At first, the steps we undertake to do more damage than good. That’s why it’s very important to arm ourselves with information on how to maintain our residential belongings in the proper manner. wooden item chair care tipsOne example of a common material used in our homes is wood. This material is very durable and is good to look at in our residences. Due to these benefits, a lot of people choose objects made of wood in their respective houses. As such, you need to know how to maintain these items without damaging their quality.

Here are several ways you can treat items built using wood to help you out.

Keep moisture to a minimum

You may not know it but moisture has a negative effect on wooden elements in your home. The increased amount of water vapor inside your house can weaken the integrity of wooden furniture, decorations, and structures. As a result, these things will fail faster during the passage of time. The wisest course of action is to get a dehumidifier to get rid of any excess moisture plaguing your wooden belongings.

Clean your wooden belongings using a damp cloth

Dust and dirt are two harmful elements wooden objects should stay away from. For instance, your wooden table will look pretty messy if it has accumulated these things after a long period of time. As a remedy, you should get a damp piece of cloth to get rid of any trace of dust or dirt. After wiping every area, you can then obtain a dry cloth to wipe all of the excess water away. This cleaning habit helps protect your wooden belongings without damaging them in the process.

Keep them away from sunlight

Just like moisture, heat plays a big part in the deterioration of wooden items. To make sure this doesn’t happen to your belongings, you need to place them far from the path of direct sunlight. You may need to rearrange your furniture and relocate wooden decorations to someplace else to prevent them from losing their quality. Otherwise, the finish of your wooden belongings will suffer.

Apply wax to make them look new all the time

Over time, the shine of wood furniture and decorations will be gone. When this happens, these items will look sloppy. If you don’t want that to happen, the most prudent thing to do is get some wax and apply it to your wooden items. When applied, the wax will provide a coating that will protect a wooden product’s inherent shine. At the same time, the wax will also protect an object made from wood against heat and other harmful elements.

Keep them away from sharp objects

There will always be a lot of sharp objects inside a house. These things include forks, knives, scissors, and sticks, among others. The edges of these items will easily damage any wooden furniture or decoration. In the event that happens, the overall value of these wooden belongings of yours will drastically drop. Do yourself a favor and store these sharp objects in a safe place.

Always be on the lookout for termites

One of biggest enemies of wooden items is a home full of termites. These pests can easily turn your wooden belongings into the trash. If you have this particular problem, better call a professional pest exterminator to get rid of these termites. You will be protecting your belongings made of wood and your whole house at the same time.

Plumbing Emergencies

Leaky Pipes

Finding a leak is only the beginning of the problem. Water from leaks can creep everywhere, along pipes and joints, soak through walls and ceilings. You may have to cut into a wall to find one. You’ll find most leaks occurring at fittings. When you do succeed in finding the leak, you can make temporary repairs using a variety of products. But keep in mind that a temporary fix is just that – temporary. You should get a temporary fix repaired properly as soon as possible.

Temporary Fixes

The most useful product for temporary fixes at joints and fittings is plumber’s epoxy putty which is available at any hardware store. First, turn off the water supply leading to the leak. If you’re not sure, you can turn off the main for enough time to make the repair. Tear off enough of the ribbon to knead and cover the joint. Be sure to follow the instructions with the putty. When you’re done, turn the water back on and check for leaks to be sure you fixed it. But this is only temporary!

The most rudimentary pipe repair is a portion of a tire tube wrapped around the pipe tightly and fastened on each end with hose clamps. Today, there are tapes with waterproof adhesives, especially for leaks. They are very effective. If the pipe itself is leaking. It does not work well at fittings. You can also get a can or tube of liquid rubber sealant which usually works well. But in all cases, remember to turn off the water first and when done, turn it back to see if it worked. There are also a variety of clamping devices that are very effective. Check your hardware store and ask for help in finding the proper clamp for your type of leak.

Frozen Pipes

I remind you, not to patronize you, that water expands when it freezes and pipes exposed to freezing temperatures can get plugged with ice and in many cases cracked by expansion. If you haven’t already done so, consider an ounce of prevention. If you have pipes subject to the elements, like in an outside wall or in a basement, you can cover them with pipe insulation which helps to reduce freezing. You can use an electrically heated pipe cover but you need power which may not be convenient. Also, electrical pipe covers can deteriorate with time and become a fire hazard. So as effective as they are, you have to watch them. If you find a frozen pipe, check it for cracks. Turn off the water supply, drain the pipe and heat it with an electric hair dryer until the ice melts. You can also use a hot.wet towel wrapped around the pipe, replacing it until the ice has melted. When melted, turn the water back on and if you’re lucky, the pipe won’t have cracked and you’re fine. If you see a leak, make a temporary repair as described above. A word again to the wise – temporary is temporary. Another tip is to never make a quick fix behind a wall. That’s bad news.

4 Solutions to Normalize Shower Water Pressure

shower water pressure of a shower headHaving a shower inside your home can be a good way to start your day or end it at night. This handy plumbing fixture allows you to bathe faster and better. Rather than store water in several containers and bathing manually, a shower can make your lives easier. But of course, there will be complications and problems with your shower after some time of using it. These problems can arise, especially if you haven’t called on a plumber to maintain your bathroom on a regular basis. One of the challenges you will encounter with your shower is not having enough pressure in it. As such, here are some ways to remedy this problem.

Replace Your Old Showerhead

First and foremost, one of the easiest solutions to this particular problem is getting a new showerhead to replace the old one. Your current showerhead may have attained a lot usage after a long amount of time.  Due to this constant usage, the internal components of your showerhead may have deteriorated. Once this happens, no amount of repair can restore your showerhead to its optimal condition.

Turn Your Water Main a Notch Higher

When your shower doesn’t have enough pressure, the water main may be at fault. If you are experiencing this specific problem with your shower, you would need to locate your property’s water main valve. Turn the dial all the way up so more water can enter your house’s plumbing system. With more water available for your shower, you can expect this bathroom fixture’s pressure to rise. Be careful though, because your water consumption might exceed your normal usage and you will have to pay more at the end of each month.

Clean the Plumbing Pipes Connected to Your Shower

A plumbing system that isn’t maintained regularly will accumulate a lot of dirt and harmful elements in it. Once this happens, the number of minerals, grease, rust, and other materials will obstruct the flow of water to your shower. Furthermore, using this kind of water won’t be safe at all for you and your loved ones. To fix this predicament, you would need to have every plumbing fixture and pipe in your house cleaned. This act will get rid of all those harmful elements and return the flow of water into your home. At the same time, having your shower and all the components connected to it cleaned will surely return water pressure to its normal levels.

Get a New Water Volume Control for Your Shower

After you have done the first three steps and your shower’s water pressure hasn’t returned, it might be time to get a new water volume control to replace the old one. As the same suggests, this tool regulates the flow of water into the showerhead to ensure a bathing experience that’s up to your standards. If you need to find a new water volume control, it would be best to call a professional plumber to find one for you and install it in your bathroom. This should be done to avoid making a mistake when you replace the old water volume control and make things worse in your home.

Here are the typical signs of clogging.

SLOWLY DRAINING WATER

Typically, water from sinks, bathrooms and other areas drains fast. When the drains are clear, you will not notice any signs of slow drainage. However, after the accumulation of dirt in the plumbing system, the water gets blocked and therefore, it starts to slow its movement. You may not notice this during the initial stages. However, it becomes worse as time goes by. Before you notice it, the water will take ages just to clear from a sink.

GURGLING NOISES FROM THE DRAINS

If you notice gurgling noises from the drains, it is an indication that it has started clogging. When you use the toilet faucet, you should hear a smooth flow of water all through. If there are any gurgling noises, it is an indication that the water is trying to find its way through some debris.

To date, a clogged sewer is still one of the most common plumbing problems. This problem develops over time and by the time you notice it, the dirt in the plumbing system will have piled to unbelievable levels. sewage pipe causes of clogged drainAlthough everyone rushes to find a plumber to unblock such sewers, studies show that most of them do not even know what causes it. The following are some of the most common causes of sewer clogging.

Soap and Fat Residues

The soap that you use in your bathroom and kitchen can slowly cause clogging in the sewer line. Soap particles often stick to the walls of pipes and drains and therefore, they become a huge chunk of solid as time goes by. They may accumulate right under the sink or in the other parts of pipes. In addition to that, fats from dishes in the kitchen can also cause clogging. When you wash dishes, the fats solidify as they drain and may cause a blockage.

Foreign Objects

Food particles, sanitary towels, pieces of cloth, children’s toys and many other objects that are introduced into the sewer lines can cause a clogged sewer. In fact, these ones will cause instant clogging, unlike soap which accumulates over time. A child could be playing with one of their toys and accidentally drops them into the drainage. It may take a lot of time to identify where the problem is even though all that you need to do is to take the item out.

Other factors that are likely to cause a clogged sewer include faulty pipes and poor plumbing. When the pipes break, they are likely to block the drainage of water at that point and so, you will have to fix it before you can enjoy a smooth flow of water through the sewer line again.

Either head to your water heater itself and either use the main shutoff handle or check to see if your water heater has a “vacation” mode that you can turn on. The other option is to turn it off at the breaker in your home’s electrical control box.

Don’t do this if it’s winter time and there is a likelihood of freezing, as that can cause more problems!

#2 Turn off the water

6 Tips for Improving Your Garage Door Security

A garage door is a major entry point for your home. For some reason, the size and scope of garage doors tend to lull us into thinking that they are somehow more secure than other doors. However, without the right security precautions, garage doors offer a perfect way for intruders to enter your home uninvited.

padlock attached on a gate for garage door securityFirst things first. If your garage door is twenty years old or older, you simply need to replace it. That’s a big expense to swallow, but it’s far less than the cost of burglary. Older garage doors simply aren’t as secure, and fundamentally there’s just no way to get them there. It’s a worthy investment for your peace of mind.

Here are six ways to improve garage door security.

1. Lock your car

Most of us leave our garage door openers in the overhead compartment of our vehicle. All it takes is a smart thief to nab that remote and have access to your home.

2. Lock interior doors

It’s tempting to feel secure and leave that interior door that leads into the garage unlocked, but it’s not safe. Always, always lock your interior garage door.

3. Lock your garage doors

At night and when you leave the house, make your garage door part of your safety check. People often just forget!

4. Close your garage door when you’re away

Even if you’re just running across the street to borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor – lock your door!

5. NEVER give out your security code

If your door has a lock with a security code, don’t give that code to anyone. Reset it if you have had to give it to someone, like a service provider or a house sitter.

6. Add exterior lighting

This can be a powerful way to prevent break-ins. Simply install high-quality security lighting to your home’s exterior, in particular around the garage door area. This is a huge deterrent.

These six tips will help you to keep your garage and your home safe and secure!

From a burglar’s perspective, your garage door is the best way to enter your house. Believe it or not, it will only take 6 seconds for a burglar to break into your house through your garage! But if you have installed garage door sensors, you can easily monitor your garage. They are designed to alarm and notify you of any unauthorized garage entry.
