Acne often is shrouded in myths. Too many people have too many misguiding thoughts, incorrect information and unfounded concerns about acne. However, time and again scientific research has been dispelling all these unreasonable opinions and beliefs. Today, we all know for sure how and why acne is caused. The medical community has found various ways to prevent and cure the problem. So what is the truth about this problem? Here is a quick attempt to reason out some of the most unreasonable myths about acne and dispel them. Myth #1: Acne occurs due to dirt or dirty skin Maintaining the skin clean is definitely good and necessary. But it is a false belief to say that acne occurs due to dirty skin. Acne happens under the skin. It happens because of accumulation of sebum and lifeless skin cells, which clog the skin pores. Myth #2: Acne can be cleared by frequently washing the face Washing keeps the skin surface clean. It does not prevent acne. Frequently washing your face will remove the oily natural skin moisturizer off your skin. If at all, washing your face too frequently can only worsen the situation by causing dry skin. Myth #3: Acne is only a teenage problem Although acne is predominantly a teenage problem, it is not necessarily limited to people of that age. It is said to affect one in every four adults too. Acne is explained to be a fall out of hormonal fluctuation and hence the incidence of acne is widespread among teenagers. This very explanation holds good for adults too since adults bodies also experience hormonal imbalances for various reasons. Myth #4: Acne is a stress-related problem Researches have evidenced that stress and acne are not really all that connected. Although this had been a belief for long years, the recent understanding has belied it. So, this too has fizzled out as yet another myth.
