Acne is an incurable problem. It can be treated with medicines and physical procedures but no guarantee can be given that it will not crop again. This is made doctors look at more effective treatments for acne. Laser is one such procedure that is being tried to treat acne quickly. If it succeeds, it can be a big boon not only for acne on face but also acne on the back where it is difficult to apply medication.

Commonly the medicines used to treat acne include- Benzoyl Peroxide, Sulphur, Resorcinol, Salicylic Acid, Vitamin A derivatives such as Tretinoin, Adaplene etc. and other medications that are used topically. Antibiotics are commonly used orally to treat the inflammation caused by the P. acnes bacteria. Lasers are new entrants in this field. Let us find out the status of lasers in treating acne.

Laser is not used extensively to treat acne. Diode laser has been used to treat acne but the results are not yet conclusive. Diode laser destroys the sebaceous glands and treats acne by stopping any production of sebum. It is sebum that is blocked by the dead skin and fills a pimple. This sebum then gets infected and the pimple becomes inflamed. By removing/destroying the sebaceous gland, laser removes the root cause of acne. The laser may cause pain but that can be reduced using local anesthetic. Side effects are very mild and temporary and include- redness, swelling etc.

Pulsed dye laser has not given satisfactory results. Some studies have been conducted with lasers but they are not being commonly used to treat acne. If you feel that you can get help from lasers, you should consult your doctor.

A Look At Laser Acne Treatment

Laser acne treatment has been around for a few years now, and it is quickly replacing more traditional forms of acne removal and prevention. As antibiotics become increasingly ineffective due to overuse, more and more people are opting for this new technique. During laser resurfacing, a doctor holds a laser pen just above the acne or acne scar tissue and waves the concentrated beam of light back and forth, vaporizing only the unwanted tissue and creating a new surface for skin cell growth. Thus the term “laser resurfacing”. New collagen actually forms after laser treatment. (Collagen is a protein in the skin’s connective tissue that helps give the skin its texture.)

Although laser resurfacing is safe and painless in almost all cases, some post-procedural bruising and swelling are normal. In most cases, these side effects persist for seven to ten days. Wait until this passes before applying make-up.

Currently there are no federal restrictions on who can perform laser resurfacing; regulations only affect the laser manufacturers themselves. There are many types of lasers for many different purposes, so be sure to use a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Be sure to ask where your doctor was trained to use the laser equipment and whether your doctor rents or owns his or her laser equipment. Ask to see before and after pictures of the doctor’s cases, and find out how many different types of lasers the doctor owns and how often each piece of equipment is used.

Many doctors feel that laser resurfacing isn’t meant for dark skin because it alters the color of skin too dramatically and unpredictably. Others believe that in the hands of a very experienced surgeon, people with darker skin tones can benefit.

Lasers acne treatment is much more invasive than non-ablative lasers. They remove by erosion, melting, evaporation, or vaporization. Ablative lasers are not recommended for use on darker skin colors.

Laser resurfacing costs upwards of $2,500 for a full face, versus $1,000 for other types of scar and acne removal. Consult with an experienced aesthetic dermatologist and laser surgeon to determine what it best for you.

Acne is a condition that can effect all ages. The scars resulting from acne can cause disfigurements. People with scars can feel insecure and less attractive. Fortunately, there are a number of scar removal methods available for people with permanent acne scars.

Derma-Peeling: This scar removal method involves removing the top layer of the skin. The treatment works by using an acid that strips the layers of the epidermis. Chemicals like Alpha Hydroxy Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acid are used in the treatment. The result is cleaner and smoother skin. It works well for mild scarring. Deeper acne will usually require a stronger acid product. Treatment is performed by a surgeon.

Skin Grafts: Also known as punch grafting, this treatment is used to remove ice pick scars. An instrument used for a biopsy is used to puncture and remove deep scars. The scar is anesthetized in order to reduce pain. A graft is taken from behind the ear and placed in the punch wound to fill in the puncture marls. The skin graft is held in place with skin glue or butterfly strips. This procedure makes the scar less visible. Collagen injections can be used to stretch the skin.

Microlipoinjection: This procedure uses fat from a donor section on the patient’s body. The injection causes the area to swell up. This method helps reduce acne scars. . Liposuction or a syringe is used to take fat cells from the patients own body. Dermal fillers will be absorbed by the body so these types of treatments do not last a lifetime. Fat transfer lasts longer that other fillers. The procedure is performed by a surgeon. .

Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion treatments remove bacteria, debris, and dead skin cells from the surface layers of the skin. A ‘microderm machine’ produces a pressurized stream of crystals on the surface of the skin. . The results after healing are smoother and softer skin with less visible scarring. Dermabrasion can be expensive. Qualified doctors will perform the procedure.

Laser Treatments: This procedure involves burning away scar tissue. A wand-like laser hand-piece is used to burn off the scarred skin cells. This results in collagen and skin cell regeneration which creates smoother skin. Skin surgeons can use two acne scar removal lasers. An Erbium (Er) or erbium YAG laser penetrates the skin and the moisture in the skin absorbs it. The heat produced by the laser spread outs allowing normal skin to remain untouched. The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser sends out short bursts of high-energy which vaporize the scarred skin tissue one layer at a time. The result is smooth and rejuvenated skin. Patients have to meet certain requirements to receive this type of procedure. The benefit is that there is a low risk of future scarring. Medical complications after laser surgery on acne scars are rare. This is an expensive treatment that is performed by a surgeon. The procedure is very accurate which allows the surgeon to target only the affected skin tissue
Subcision Treatment: This procedure involves using a needle that contains a lancing point. The point is placed under the skin and a doctor will cut the fibers that join the skin surface to the fat located under the skin. It is an effective method but can be expensive.

Acne scarring is a very common skin condition. Scarring can affect many areas of the skin such as the face, back, and neck. The result will often make people insecure about their appearance and body. Acne scar removal treatment can reduce or eliminate scarring. It is important to consult with a specialist before undergoing a treatment to determine the best procedure.
