Spring Plumbing Checklist

When your azaleas bloom, plumbing is probably the last thing on your mind. However, a spring plumbing checklist can help you avoid big problems later in the year. Add these tips to your spring cleaning list to avoid plumbing problems in the future.

Here’s a plumbing checklist for spring:

Indoors

  • Have a professional look at and drain your water heater. Once a year, you should empty it.
  • Check your basement walls for signs of water, cracks, or leaks after it has rained a lot.
  • Make sure that your sump pump works right. You can fill the pump silo with water to raise the float and turn on the motor. Call MVCH Mount Vernon HVAC if it doesn’t work right.
  • A quick way to fix a faucet is to use half a lemon to remove water stains.
  • Clean your garbage disposal well to keep it from getting clogged in the future. (And never put these foods down the drain!)
  • Check the grout and caulk around sinks, tubs, and showers for damage and fix or replace it.
  • Clean your shower heads to stop minerals and mold from building up.
  • Check and replace the hoses on your washing machine and ice maker.
  • Install a water alarm to keep your home from flooding during spring storms or when appliances break down.

Outdoors

  • Your gutters and downspouts should be clean.
  • Make it a habit to check your crawl space regularly for water buildup or too much moisture.
  • Find plumbing leaks by learning how to check a water meter.
  • Your sprinkler system needs to be flushed and checked for leaks. Make sure your sprinkler heads are pointed in the right direction and are not spraying your house’s walls.
  • Check the valve where the water comes into your house, the faucets outside, and the toilet valves. To find leaks, turn each one off and on several times.
  • Take off any temporary insulation, like pipe jackets and faucet covers, that was put in place for the winter.
  • When planting new trees, watch out for underground pipes.
